DANCING

To the Music in Higher Dimensions

You're blindfolded, listening to drum music, and someone asks you to draw the drum. Kate Okikulo's mathematics provides the tools that would allow you to perform this task.

Kate Okikulo, Professor of Mathematics at the University of California at San Diego, researches the relationship between the shapes of a drum and the sound that the drum makes. She has developed a mathematical procedure called "moving to the music" that links sounds to shapes.
